Seminars

YLS puts on approximately 5 - 10 seminars per year which are designed to introduce young lawyers to specific areas of law such as federal, superior and municipal court practice. They also provide young lawyers with education on how to handle personal finances, tax issues, ethical pitfalls and how to handle work-life balance as a new attorney.

Happy Hours

The YLS meets monthly at various venues around Essex County. All young lawyers are welcome and ECBA Officers and Trustees are invited to attend. The events provide a forum for new attorneys to meet and network and often times new programs are developed to either enhance professional development or give back to the community.

Sponsorship of numerous events

YLS co-sponsors numerous events for students and the public throughout the year. Each January and February the YLS hosts the local Vincent J. Apruzzese Mock Trial Program for Students in Essex County in cooperation with the New Jersey State Bar Foundation.

Law Day Celebration

In celebration of Law Day — generally observed on May 1 each year — the YLS works hand in hand with the administration of the Essex County Vicinage to host a day of Courts in the Community. With the support of the NJSBF, the Essex County Vicinage administration and the ECBA, teams of volunteer Judges, Law Clerks and Attorneys visit local schools to present a mock trial with the students participating as lawyers, witnesses, and jurors. The fact pattern is prepared each year by a committee of the courts and the bar and generally addresses timely issues facing our young people, such as music piracy, bullying and weapons in the schools. There is a companion program that asks the students to create original pieces of art, poetry, essays and video presentations related to the annual Law Day theme.
